Affiliate terms, in plain English

The short version of how this works. By claiming a community you agree to it.

1. What you get

A live local news site for your community and the affiliate tools listed on the plan page. Features marked Coming soon are not included until they are released.

2. What it costs

Nothing up front. No card, no deposit, no setup fee. A small platform fee comes out of your earnings each month, and never more than you earned, so a slow month costs you nothing. Your monthly fee depends on your community size: $39 a month for 5,000 to 9,999 residents; $59 a month for 10,000 to 19,999 residents; $89 a month for 20,000 to 39,999 residents; $119 a month for 40,000 or more residents. No long contract. Cancel anytime.

3. Launch and keeping your town

You have 14 days to finish your launch checklist and 60 days to sign your first sponsor. After that, keep publishing and selling. If a town goes quiet, we give you 7 days of notice, then reopen it to the next person on the waitlist. Your stories stay yours.

4. Selling ads and your share

You may sell the ad placements on your site to local businesses using our rate card. We invoice the advertiser and collect the money. Keep 40% of ad revenue you sell up to $1,000 a month, 50% from $1,000 to $3,000, and 60% above $3,000. Each rate applies only to the dollars in that band. For your first 90 days you keep 70% of everything you sell. When the advertiser pays, we pay you by the 15th of the following month. If an advertiser does not pay, no share is owed for that ad.

5. Other income

Money you earn outside our ad spots, such as events, your own newsletter or memberships, freelance writing, workshops, ads you sell on your own podcast, and sponsored articles you write and sell yourself, is yours to keep. We take no cut of it. A sponsored article must clearly say who paid for it.

6. Network ads

When we sell an ad across many communities and it runs on your site, we pay you 30% of the revenue for as long as it runs there.

7. Your own business

Ads are sold to third parties and billed by us. If you or your family own the advertiser, you earn no commission on that ad. Your own business can take up to 2 rail, in-article, native or partner spots, and the ad is labeled as owned by the affiliate. Title sponsorships and banners are for other businesses, so every local business gets a fair shot.

8. Your name and photo

Your name, headshot and bio appear with your stories, takes on games and events. You are the face of your community site, so keep it accurate and professional.

9. Other products

If a business you introduced buys another of our products, we pay you 20% of what they pay for the first 12 months, when they pay.

10. Your stories and photos

You own what you create. You give us permission to show, share and promote it on the site. Only post things you made or have permission to use. Do not copy other publishers.

11. Our rules

No illegal, defamatory or misleading content. Ads must be clearly labeled. Political ads need a proper paid-for-by line. No fake reviews. We can remove content or pause a site that breaks these rules.

12. You are independent

You run your own business and handle your own taxes. You are not our employee, partner or agent. We send tax forms when the law requires them.

13. No guarantees

We do not promise traffic, sponsors or income. Results vary, and some affiliates earn little or nothing.

14. Ending this

Either of us can end this with 30 days notice. We can end it right away if the rules are broken. Your original stories stay yours, and we pay any share you have already earned.

15. Changes

We may update these terms. We will give you 30 days notice by email. Continuing after that means you accept the update.

16. Questions

This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice.

Build a real local site and keep even more

Your share goes up as you run a full site: a current calendar, fresh content, contributors, high school coverage, and food, money and fitness voices. Run a bare site and it stays lower. It is measured automatically, every day.

Every new affiliate has 60 days at the Starter share while the site gets going. The share you keep for a month is the middle of that month's daily readings.

You run the town. We run everything else.

A fair split for what each side does.

We run

  • Hosting, security and every update
  • Sports, scores, standings and highlights
  • News, TV, video and radio feeds
  • Weather, radar and alerts
  • 61 games and contests you can sell branding on
  • Ad serving, invoices, payment collection and billing
  • A sales toolkit, proposals and support

You run

  • Sell the sponsors and keep them happy
  • Keep the calendar and your local content fresh
  • Add contributors, high school coverage and voices
  • Be the trusted local face of the site
  • No setup fee, no monthly bill up front, no minimum ad budget and nothing to buy. The small site fee comes out of what you earn and can never be more than you earned.
  • You are paid on ads that sponsors have actually paid for. Refunds and chargebacks come out of the same month.
  • One community per affiliate to start. A second unlocks after 90 days at Publisher or above.
  • Use it or lose it: a community stays yours while it stays out of the Needs attention level. After 90 days there it reopens to other applicants, with 30 days notice to you.
  • Ads that the network sells and that run on your site earn you 30% while they run.
  • Your launch boost: keep 70% of everything you sell in your first 90 days.
  • Local advertisers only. Every ad you sell must be for a business located in or serving your community. National brands are welcome through their local store or dealer, using that store's own page, so the Ace Hardware in your town is welcome and national Ace Hardware is not. No affiliate links, tracking links or affiliate programs (Amazon, travel, coupon networks and the like) in ads, spots, events or stories. The network runs those itself.
  • Network placements: the network reserves the right to run Amazon Associates ads, travel and booking widgets, house ads and network promotions in the network strip on every page and in any placement that has not been sold, at its discretion and within the site templates. That revenue belongs to the network and is not part of your commissionable sales. A sponsor you sell always keeps the placement they bought, and network placements do not change what your sponsors bought.

These are the working terms and can change with notice. Have your own advisor review the agreement before you sign.
